Our History

S & S Destination is located in the heart of Chapin, and is situated next to the railroad tracks on the corner of Chapin Road (Hwy 76) and Lexington Avenue.

The railroad arrived in Chapin, South Carolina in 1889. The town was originally established as a depot on the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad line. This rail line played a significant role in the development and growth of Chapin as a community centered around transportation and commerce.

The railroad brought about growth for the town of Chapin, and remains located the center of town.

Old photos of what is now S & S Destination provided by Stan Shealy, prior Mayor of Chapin and Chapin Historical Expert.  Stan tells us a brief history:  "Bunyan and Geneva Wessinger had a store here.  One of the above photo shows the Wessingers with Haskell Wessinger on the left and Lee Comalander on the right.  The earliest I can recall, it was a Gulf Station (I believe Lee Comalander operated it and later Chunk Shealy). For a time it was operated as a bait shop.  In the 1970s, it was where Dr. Luther Elmgreen, an optometrist, operated.   Later, Dick Weldon ran Eagles Corner, an ice cream shop.  It was a candy shop for a while before it was restored as S&S."
